At Teen Health Ambassadors, we believe this that health is more than the absent of disease. It involves proactive health care, which means having medical supplies on hand for small health issues like headaches, wounds, and cavity-free teeth. It involves the positive emotions that arise in communities when underrepresented voices are heard and the underserved are served.
The goal of teen health ambassadors is to create sustainable health improvements in rural & urban areas that are inaccessible to health care, as well as long term cultural shifts (perhaps the most difficult thing to build a more proactive and healthy future).
We often think of healers as people who are older and do the big things in medicine. However, children in underserved areas not only rarely see seasoned medical professionals, but they also look up to their peers and can be more receptive to both the message and delivery of healthcare supplies by someone who is more their contemporary in age. Therefore, when teens serve as health ambassadors, they can effectively influence peers and younger children to embark on healthier behaviors, and to trust medical science. An “immediate good” that teen health ambassadors have noted is the willingness of children to engage in better nutrition, better hygiene, that prevents diseases such as malaria, diarrhea, hygienic and respiratory infections. The future “good” we hope to see will be a boost in children’s understanding and belief in the help sciences, the good that public health can accomplish, and also the future promotion of essential practices such as : hand washing, proper nutrition and balance, taking care of sickness.
